Gruff Gruff Gruff

The kids and I went to one of my favorite Balboa Park attractions this morning, the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater. The theater is this tiny old thing and has the old fashioned theater seats and that musty smell that transports me to the olden days. All of the previous performances have been just as you’d expect them to be. I’ve loved the experience of it all, but they’ve all been slightly dull. Not today though. The hipster puppeteers were in the house with their skinny jeans and pageboy caps and live organ music. They improv’d “The Billy Goats Gruff” with audience participation (even Oscar helped). Small puppets were eaten by large puppets while the organ was playing triple time – this part was distressing to Laurel but Oscar LOVED it. At the end, all of the puppets and props laid in an exhausted heap on the stage and half of the moms walked out complaining while the other half were giggling. I loved it–it reminded me a bit of a live concert by The Flaming Lips. I believe the show runs through Sunday in case you’re interested.
