The New Children’s Museum

It has only been open for three days, but we’ve already checked out The New Children’s Museum. What a great place–we bought a membership. The museum’s tag line is “think play create” and Oscar did each of those things during our visit.
think Oscar contemplated his feelings about many of the pieces of art in the museum. Most notably, he had a negative reaction to this mural “Dynamics.” He kept telling me that he didn’t like it, but he also couldn’t take his eyes off of it.

play I’d like to thank artists Allan Kapraw and Brian Dick for their “No Rules Except…Yard” exhibition. This mattress-padded, pillow-filled play space induced Oscar’s three hour nap this afternoon.
create Oscar is responsible for the addition of eighteen ounces of pink and blue paint to the museum’s obsolete vehicle VW Bug painting project. Lucky for me, he looked just like the kid in “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! ”
Laurel had a good time, but this is certainly a place that she can grow into to appreciate more.
I used to work at the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose and had a special interest in scoping out this new attraction. Even though I’ve told myself that I’m done working for nonprofits, I couldn’t help but imagine myself working at the museum.
Kids in San Diego are so lucky. In case the zoo, beach, Wild Animal Park, Balboa Park, Birch Aquarium, Sea World, and Legoland were not enough–they now get to enjoy the children’s museum. Punks!
Your museum sounds great. We have one in town, too. It is well-used (overcrowded) and I get a bit bored hanging out there, but Mogs really does love going. Our museum is building a new and much bigger building on property that is about three blocks from our house. I hope it is finished while she is still little enough to enjoy it.
