Poker Face

Last night Oscar had a hard time falling asleep and kept sneaking out of his room. We’d ro-sham-bo to see who’d be in charge of returning him to bed. When it was my turn I had the hardest time keeping a firm and calm manner about myself. He was just too cute, even when he was crying “but Momma, but Momma!” I’m writing about this because there have been nights (and are sure to be more) when it is not cute or funny when he disobeyed a basic household rule, so I want to acknowledge when I have a more positive response to the situation. Sometimes you just want to scoop them up, kiss them, and laugh at the way that they are acting even though you know you shouldn’t because all you’ll really do is undermine your effort at maintaining consistency. It is kind of like the time we discovered that Clara (the dog) howls on command. Ohmagod, it is hysterical. I would totally record it, YouTube it, and share it with you if it weren’t for the fear that she would begin howling all the time.
