Frogtastic
May 18th, 2008 by Anna
Like I said in my previous post, we’ve just returned from a Frog Jump holiday. I grew up in Murphys, a small town located in Calaveras County. Calaveras County is known for hosting a frog jump competition during the county fair in honor of a short story by Mark Twain called “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. I was determined to get my kid to jump a frog this year. Here’s Oscar joining the competition with his frog “Oscar the Great”.
My niece and nephew, Alicia and Andrew. joined in the fun.
Laurel wasn’t able to jump a frog, but she did grow her hair long enough for her first pony tails. Atta girl!

I am kind of flipping out that you guys went to the Fair. WE have kids old enough to jump a frog…amazing isn’t it. What a treat to see the photos and, of course, sad to hear about the accident. When I think of the rides there I think about riding the Zipper and the Gravitron–which I threw up after riding once.
I am glad you are all safe and had a good time with the frogs. Do you go every spring? Do they still close down the area schools during fair time?
What a cutie!!!!
I love Oscar and Oscar the Great. What an adorable competition.
Yep – the schools close for Frog Jump. Also, they still hang old timey clothes over Main Street in Angels Camp (I always loved that as a kid). I had taken Brian once to the fair years ago, but this was our first trip with the kids. I imagine we’ll go again a couple of years down the road so that Laurel can jump a frog, too.
Oscar the great finished 59th this year. He will do better next time. Toooo much fun.
